White Dog centres on Julie Sawyer, a young actress who hits a stray white German shepherd with her car, has it treated and takes it in after no owner comes forward. The dog first proves its loyalty by defending her during a break-in at her home, but it later attacks a Black woman without provocation, and Julie learns the animal has been conditioned to go for Black people. Unwilling to have it destroyed, she takes it to a training facility known as Noah's Ark, where the head trainer, Keys, agrees to attempt to recondition the dog even though he is Black himself and every session puts him at risk. The film was adapted from Romain Gary's novel, with Curtis Hanson and Samuel Fuller writing the screenplay, and Jon Davison producing for Paramount.
Fuller directed it after The Big Red One, the seventh of the features listed here, and it stars Kristy McNichol, Paul Winfield, Burl Ives and Jameson Parker among a credited cast of 32. Made for a budget of about 8 million dollars, it runs 90 minutes and mixes drama, horror and thriller elements. On TMDB it holds a 6.6 rating from 310 votes, while critics rated it 7.9 from 17 reviews, a notably warmer response than the audience score.
