Initial D follows Takumi Fujiwara, a young man who has spent years delivering tofu for his father before dawn along the mountain roads of Mount Akina in a modest Toyota AE86. The routine has quietly turned him into an exceptional driver, though he takes little interest in racing himself. When he is drawn into an impromptu challenge against a local street racer and wins, word spreads, and he is pulled into the underground world of drift racing against more experienced competitors.
The film was directed by Andrew Lau Wai-Keung, the seventeenth of the twenty-five features he has directed, arriving after 1:99 Shorts and before 无间道正序版. Alan Mak is also credited as director. The screenplay was written by Felix Chong Man-keung and Shuichi Shigeno, and the film was produced by Andrew Lau Wai-Keung and Ronald Wong. Jay Chou plays Takumi, with Anne Suzuki, Jordan Chan, Shawn Yue, Anthony Wong and Kenny Bee among the main cast; sixty-five cast members are credited in total. It was made for about 2 million USD and took roughly 7 million USD worldwide. On TMDB it holds a 6.7 rating from 314 votes.
