One Direction: This Is Us is a concert documentary about the British-Irish boy band One Direction, following Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. It traces how the five singers came together after separately auditioning for the British version of The X Factor in 2010, where Simon Cowell helped form them into a group. The film mixes behind-the-scenes footage from their tour with live performance material, including a show at London's O2 Arena in April 2013 during their Take Me Home Tour, and spends time with the members and their families as they reflect on their rapid rise and the pressures that came with it.
Morgan Spurlock directed, three years after Freakonomics and nine years after Super Size Me. Spurlock produced alongside Cowell and Adam Milano, and all five band members appear as themselves, with Cowell also on screen. Made for a modest 10 million dollars, it earned about 69 million worldwide, a strong return for a music documentary.
Reception splits sharply. On IMDb, roughly 26,000 voters give it 4.4 out of 10, while on TMDB about 1,080 users rate it 8.2 out of 10. A critics' score of 5.8 out of 10 from 89 reviews places professional opinion between the two audience camps.
