Short description
Two athletes whose careers have stalled are pushed together in the hope of reaching the Winter Olympics. Doug Dorsey was a hockey player until an eye injury ended his time in the sport, while Kate Moseley is a figure skater whose attitude has driven away every partner she has been paired with. Her coach brings them together as a pairs team, and the arrangement works only if the two can tolerate each other long enough to compete.
The Cutting Edge was released in 1992 and runs 102 minutes. Paul Michael Glaser directed it, following The Running Man (1987); The Air Up There (1994) and Kazaam (1996) came later. Tony Gilroy wrote the screenplay, and Ted Field, Robert W. Cort and Karen Murphy produced. D.B. Sweeney and Moira Kelly play Doug and Kate, with Roy Dotrice as Anton Pamchenko, Terry O'Quinn as Jack Moseley, Dwier Brown as Hale Forrest and Chris Benson as Walter Dorsey among a credited cast of 21.
Made by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer with Interscope Communications and MGM-Pathé Communications, the film took about 25 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.9/10 from 25,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.3/10 from 439 votes. A critics' rating of 6/10 from 37 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Christine Hugh and Doug Ladre, who played the Russian figure skaters, are actually figure skaters. They compete for Canada.
- Neither D.B. Sweeney nor Moira Kelly knew how to ice skate before filming began. After passing auditions and convincing the producers that they were quite suitable for the roles, they actively learned to ice skate over the next three months.
- During the first week of filming, Moira Kelly botched a jump and injured her leg. As a result of the injury, her leg was in a cast for an entire month, and all the ice skating scenes were moved to the very end of the shooting period.
- Moira Kelly and D.B. Sweeney agreed between themselves that they would only appear together in a sequel to the film. When they were offered one version of the sequel script, Sweeney called it “nightmarish” and the fee ridiculous. Since then, two sequels have been filmed and released directly to DVD, and two television films – all without Sweeney and Kelly.
