Short description
Brooklyn follows Eilis Lacey, a young woman in 1950s Ireland who leaves her hometown and her family for New York, drawn by the chance of a better life. Settling in Brooklyn and finding work, she struggles at first with homesickness, then gradually settles into her new surroundings and falls in love with Tony Fiorello, a young Italian-American. News of trouble at home pulls her back to Ireland, where she meets Jim Farrell, and she must decide between the country she came from and the life she has built in America.
John Crowley directed the film, its screenplay was written by Nick Hornby, and it was produced by Amanda Posey and Finola Dwyer. It sits between Closed Circuit and The Goldfinch among the six features Crowley has directed. Saoirse Ronan leads as Eilis, with Emory Cohen, Domhnall Gleeson, Jim Broadbent and Julie Walters among the cast of 47 credited performers.
Made for a modest 11 million dollars, Brooklyn took 62 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. Audiences rate it 7.5 out of 10 on IMDb from around 158,000 votes and 7.3 out of 10 on TMDB from over 3,300 votes, while critics' reviews average 8.5 out of 10 across 277 assessments, placing the film higher with critics than with viewers. It runs 111 minutes and was produced by companies in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Canada.
What's left behind the scenes
- Rooney Mara was initially chosen for the lead role, but ultimately declined. She was later replaced by Saoirse Ronan.
- Among Irish-produced films, the picture received the widest local release in history and showed the best opening weekend box office in 19 years, since "Michael Collins" (1996).
- The joint participation of Donal Gleeson and Julie Walters in the film was their second after working on the “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” diology (2010/2011), where Gleeson played Bill Weasley and Walters his mother Molly.
