Hacksaw Ridge tells the true story of Desmond Doss, a young American from rural Virginia who enlists during the Second World War while refusing, on religious grounds, to carry a weapon or take a life. He serves as an army medic instead, and his convictions put him at odds with his fellow soldiers and his superiors, leading to a military hearing over his refusal to bear arms. Sent to the Pacific, he takes part in the battle for Okinawa, where he works to bring wounded men to safety under enemy fire.
The film was directed by Mel Gibson, its fifth feature behind the camera, following The Man Without a Face, Braveheart, The Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto. Andrew Garfield plays Doss, with Sam Worthington, Vince Vaughn, Teresa Palmer, Luke Bracey and Hugo Weaving among the cast. Robert Schenkkan and Andrew Knight wrote the screenplay, and Bruce Davey, David Permut and Brian Oliver produced.
Made for a budget of about 40 million dollars, the film took roughly 180 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its cost. On IMDb it holds 8.1 out of 10 from around 675,000 votes, and on TMDB 8.2 out of 10 from more than 15,000 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 7.3 out of 10 from 280 reviews, so audiences have rated it somewhat higher than critics.
