Short description

Ride Along centres on Ben Barber, a high-school security guard who has spent two years trying to convince James Payton, a decorated Atlanta police detective, that he deserves to marry James's sister Angela. After Ben is accepted into the police academy, he asks James for his blessing. James, unconvinced, invites him on a twenty-four-hour patrol through Atlanta, intending to put the eager recruit through his paces. The shift turns into something far more dangerous when the two cross paths with a major criminal figure in the city.

Tim Story directed the film, the eighth of fifteen he has directed in chronological order, following Think Like a Man Too and preceding Ride Along 2. The screenplay is by Greg Coolidge, Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, and the producers include Ice Cube, Larry Brezner and Will Packer. Ice Cube plays James and Kevin Hart plays Ben, with John Leguizamo, Bruce McGill, Tika Sumpter and Bryan Callen among the supporting cast. Forty-five cast members and seventy crew members are credited.

Produced by Universal Pictures, Relativity Media, Cube Vision and Rainforest Entertainment on a budget of 25 million dollars, the film went on to take about 154 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its cost. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.3 out of 10 from roughly 2,500 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • It was originally intended that Dwayne Johnson would play the role of James, and Ryan Reynolds would play Ben.
  • In the conference room, Ice Cube says, "It was a good day." When Ice Cube still performed on stage, first as part of the group N.W.A. and then as a solo artist, "It Was A Good Day" was one of his popular songs.
  • Previously, Ice Cube and Laurence Fishburne starred together in John Singleton's dramas 'Boyz n the Hood' (1991) and 'Higher Learning' (1995).
  • At the end of the film, in Ben's house, the viewer can see a poster for the 2012 Electronic Arts computer game Mass Effect 3.
  • This is the second film in which John Leguizamo and Laurence Fishburne have appeared together. In 2005, they both starred in Jean-François Richet's action movie 'Attack the Block'.
  • In the warehouse scene, when Ben threatens James, he mentions using the so-called 'death by a thousand cuts.' This form of torture and execution was practiced in China starting approximately in 900 BC and was only banned in 1905.
  • James drives an unmarked police car, yet throughout the entire film, he never once turns on the siren or the flashing lights. (In several instances, Ben attempts to turn them on.)
  • The warehouse where the shootout takes place is the same one used in the 16th episode of the 4th season of the series 'The Walking Dead' (2010).
