National Theatre Live: The Misanthrope

This dark comedy and drama centers on Alice, a gifted novelist who rejects modern societal expectations regarding kindness and respect. As she openly challenges popular beliefs and addresses controversial topics, she faces growing isolation from her peers and finds her personal connections deteriorating. The story follows the professional and private costs she incurs for her refusal to conform to social norms.

The film was produced by the National Theatre in the United Kingdom and features a screenplay based on the work of Molière, adapted by Martin Crimp. It was directed by Indhu Rubasingham, following her 2024 production of National Theatre Live: The Father and the Assassin. The project also involved Christine Lalla, who directed National Theatre Live: Dear England in 2024 and National Theatre Live: Hamlet in 2026.

Sandra Oh stars as Alice, appearing alongside Paul Chahidi as John, Abigail Cruttenden as Claire, Imogen Elliott as Esmée, Rina Fatania as Indira, and Freddie MacBruce as Allen. The production has a runtime of 150 minutes.
