Marc, a man who has worn a moustache for his entire adult life, shaves it off on a whim and waits for his wife Agnès to react. She says nothing, and neither do the friends they see afterward. When Marc finally points out the change, everyone insists he has never had a moustache, leaving him to wonder whether he is losing his mind, whether those close to him are playing an elaborate trick, or whether something has gone wrong with the world itself. The disagreement unsettles his marriage as he searches for an explanation.
The Moustache is a French drama and mystery directed by Emmanuel Carrère, who wrote the screenplay with Jérôme Beaujour. It was Carrère's first feature as director, arriving well before Between Two Worlds in 2022, and Anne-Dominique Toussaint produced it. Vincent Lindon plays Marc, with Emmanuelle Devos as Agnès, Mathieu Amalric as Serge, Hippolyte Girardot as Bruno, Cylia Malki as Samira and Macha Polikarpova as Nadia among a credited cast of twenty-two. The film runs 86 minutes and was released in June 2005.
On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.1 out of 10 from 124 votes, which suggests a modest response from those who have logged it.
