Estômago: A Gastronomic Story centres on Raimundo Nonato, a poor young man who arrives in the city from Brazil's impoverished sertão and discovers an unexpected talent in the kitchen. Hired to do odd jobs in a bar in Curitiba, he turns the rundown establishment around with his coxinhas, catches the attention of an Italian restaurateur named Giovanni, and rises through the ranks of the kitchen. His good fortune brings him comfort, social ties and a relationship with Iria, a woman who trades sex for food. Running alongside this ascent is a second timeline: Nonato confined in a prison cell shared with other inmates, where his cooking earns him standing among dangerous men. The film moves between the two periods, building toward the question of how a gifted cook ended up behind bars.

The film is the first feature directed by Marcos Jorge, who wrote the screenplay with Fabrizio Donvito and Cláudia da Natividade. João Miguel leads as Nonato, with Fabiula Nascimento, Babu Santana, Carlo Briani, Zeca Cenovicz and Marco Zenni among a credited cast of thirty-four. A Brazilian-Italian co-production running 113 minutes, it mixes comedy, crime, drama and mystery.

On IMDb it holds 7.8/10 from around 9,800 votes, and on TMDB 7.9/10 from roughly 300. Jorge returned to the character years later with Estomago 2: The Cookfather, followed by Doutor Monstro.
