Short description
Two turkeys with very different backgrounds must overcome their disagreements to save their species. After discovering a time machine, the pair travels back several centuries to the era of the first Thanksgiving. Their goal is to alter history and ensure that turkey is permanently removed from the holiday menu.
Directed by Jimmy Hayward, this animated comedy was released in 2013. It follows his previous work on Horton Hears a Who! and Jonah Hex. The film was produced in the United States by Reel FX Creative Studios and Relativity Media. The voice cast features Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson, Amy Poehler, George Takei, Colm Meaney, and Keith David.
With a budget of 55 million USD, the movie earned 110 million USD at the worldwide box office. Audience reception is moderate, with a rating of 5.8/10 on IMDb based on 28,000 votes and 5.9/10 on TMDB from 882 votes. Film critics gave the movie a lower rating of 4.3/10 based on 89 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- To better understand the psychology and physiology of the main characters, the project's creators – artists, animators, and designers – visited a turkey farm in East Texas.
- To develop the characters' physicality, the modeling department specialists bought a frozen turkey at the nearest supermarket, reconstructed the bird, and then conducted a series of computer movement tests.
- To most accurately convey the movements of the main characters' plumage, the team developed their own program called Avian (avian – English for bird).
- In one scene, the residents throw dynamite at the turkeys. Dynamite was invented in 1867 – 250 years after the time period in which the film's events take place.
