Short description

Jep Gambardella is a journalist and critic who once wrote a novel that won him a literary prize and a reputation he has never lived up to since. Now 65, he moves through the parties, terraces and salons of Rome, charming and needling the politicians, aristocrats, artists and hangers-on who surround him. A shock from his past unsettles the cynical detachment he has cultivated for decades, and he begins to look past the nightlife at the city itself and at the life he has made. Paolo Sorrentino directed and wrote the screenplay with Umberto Contarello, following his earlier features The Consequences of Love, Il Divo and This Must Be the Place.

Toni Servillo plays Jep, heading a cast of 64 that includes Carlo Verdone, Sabrina Ferilli, Carlo Buccirosso, Iaia Forte and Pamela Villoresi. Made for around 9 million dollars, the film took roughly 25 million dollars worldwide, a strong return for an Italian-language drama. On IMDb it holds 7.7/10 from about 106,000 votes and on TMDB 7.5/10 from some 3,361 votes. A critics' rating of 8/10 across 135 reviews places it above both audience scores.

Sorrentino continued with Rio, I Love You, Youth, Loro 2, Loro 1 and Loro, The Hand of God, Parthenope and La Grazia. The film runs 142 minutes and was released on 21 May 2013.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is dedicated to Paolo Sorrentino’s friend – the famous Italian rugby player and journalist Giuseppe D’Avanzo, who died during the filming of the movie.
  • In an interview with the Italian radio station Radio 2, Paolo Sorrentino noted that at one point during the production stage, he considered naming the film “The Human Apparatus” (L'Apparato Umano). This is the title of a fictional novel written by the film’s main character, played by Toni Servillo.
  • The performance given by Talia Concept's character is an obvious allusion to the artist Marina Abramović.
