Short description
Twenty years after leaving Scotland, Mark Renton comes back to Edinburgh. His old friends are still there: Simon, known as Sick Boy, and Daniel "Spud" Murphy, who both reconnect with him quickly, while Francis "Franco" Begbie has recently broken out of prison and holds a grudge against Renton. The men have left heroin behind, but their lives are far from settled, and they try to keep out of Begbie's path. The film is a sequel to Trainspotting and draws on Irvine Welsh's later novel about the same characters.
Danny Boyle directed, with John Hodge writing the screenplay, reuniting the team behind the 1996 original. It is the thirteenth of Boyle's seventeen films in chronological order, following Steve Jobs and preceding Yesterday. Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, Ewen Bremner and Robert Carlyle return in the lead roles, with Anjela Nedyalkova and Shirley Henderson also appearing. Boyle produced alongside Andrew Macdonald and Bernard Bellew.
Made for about 18 million dollars, the film took roughly 42 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.1 out of 10 from around 141,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.9 out of 10 from about 3,500 votes, while critics gave it 7 out of 10 across some 250 reviews. Audience and critical responses sit close together, both indicating a generally favourable but not enthusiastic reception.
What's left behind the scenes
- In January 2009, Danny Boyle announced his desire to make a sequel to his film "Trainspotting." The plot was to unfold nine years after the events of the original.
- The film is Danny Boyle's first sequel as a director and second as a producer (in 2007 he produced "28 Weeks Later" – a continuation of his film "28 Days Later" (2002)). He was considered for the director's chair for the fourth installment of the Alien franchise (which eventually became "Alien Resurrection" (1997)), but Boyle turned down the project due to creative differences with the studio and instead filmed "A Life Less Ordinary" (1997).
- In an interview in November 2014, Irvine Welsh revealed that McGregor and Boyle had resolved their differences and begun meeting to discuss filming the sequel.
- Ewan McGregor's appearance in the cast of the sequel to "Trainspotting" (1995) will mark his first collaboration with Danny Boyle since the fantastic comedic melodrama "A Life Less Ordinary," which was released in 1997. The actor and director fell out when the latter cast Leonardo DiCaprio instead of McGregor in the leading role of the dramatic thriller "The Beach" (2000). Furthermore, this will be the second time in McGregor’s acting career that he reprises a role. The first instance was his portrayal of Obi-Wan Kenobi in the prequels to the original "Star Wars" trilogy.

- Filming of the movie began on March 10, 2016, in Edinburgh (Scotland). Filming was originally scheduled for May 2016.
