Set in Cornwall in the years before the First World War, Summer in February follows a group of artists living in the bohemian Lamorna colony. Florence Carter-Wood arrives from London hoping to study art and enjoy a freer life, and she joins her brother among the painters there. Two men fall for her: the rebellious Alfred Munnings and his friend Gilbert Evans, the estate's land agent. Florence's choice between them sets up a love triangle that affects all three.
The drama was directed by Christopher Menaul, whose earlier credits include the television films Fatherland and Planespotting, and written by Jonathan Smith. Dominic Cooper plays Munnings, with Emily Browning as Florence and Dan Stevens as Gilbert. Hattie Morahan and Shaun Dingwall appear as the painters Laura and Harold Knight. The film ran 101 minutes and was released in 2013.
Audience response was modest: on IMDb it holds 5.6/10 from over four thousand votes, and on TMDB 5.4/10 from a much smaller number. A critics' rating of 4.5/10 from 43 reviews sits below both audience figures, so the film drew somewhat warmer notices from viewers than from reviewers. It remains a small British period drama rather than a major commercial title.
