Nancy Stockwell is unhappily married to Albert, and after fifteen years together she leaves him a note saying she is visiting friends. When she does not return, Albert discovers that she has been in contact with a man named Louis Farley, whom she met online. Nancy and Louis, both carrying their own wounds, have exchanged messages, pictures and plans. What Nancy seeks from Louis is not romance in any ordinary sense: she wants him to end her life, and Louis, who has agreed to do it for money, finds himself drawn to her instead of treating her as a client. Albert, left behind and unwilling to accept that his wife has gone, becomes part of a situation that none of the three can control.

Johan Renck directed the film, his first feature, from a screenplay by Pamela Cuming and Lee Ross. Maria Bello plays Nancy, with Rufus Sewell as Albert and Jason Patric as Louis; Amy Brenneman, Michael Nyqvist and David Brown appear in supporting roles. The production had a budget of about 3 million dollars. Renck went on to direct Spaceman, released in 2024.

Audience reactions recorded on IMDb give the film 5.7 out of 10 from roughly 3,200 votes, while on TMDB it holds 5.4 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes. Both figures point to a modest reception for this drama.
