Short description

Roy Eberhardt is used to being the new kid, having moved around often, but his family's relocation from Montana to a small Florida town proves unusually eventful. There he meets a barefoot boy on the run and a tough classmate, and the three of them take on a scheme that would destroy the burrows of an endangered owl species to make way for a new restaurant. Their campaign brings them up against businessmen, local officials and police who would rather the digging go ahead, and Roy finds his new home is worth fighting for.

Hoot is a 2006 family adventure adapted from Carl Hiaasen's novel, directed by Wil Shriner in his feature debut and produced by Frank Marshall and Jimmy Buffett. It stars Logan Lerman as Roy, alongside Brie Larson, Cody Linley, Luke Wilson, Tim Blake Nelson and Neil Flynn.

The film was made for about 15 million USD and took roughly 8 million USD worldwide, a return well short of its cost. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.6 from 146 votes, while the critics' score of 4.8 from 99 reviews sits close to the audience response.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The main part of the filming took place from July 6 to September 2, 2005, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and on the small island of Gasparilla off the coast of Florida. Several scenes were filmed separately much later in Los Angeles in January 2006.
  • Famous American singer Jimmy Buffett, known for his original style, became one of the film's producers, played a small role as Mr. Ryan, a marine biology teacher, and wrote and performed five original songs for the soundtrack.
  • If you look closely at the small print in the newspaper under the photograph of Officer Delinko's car, which has been painted black, you will notice that the director, Will Shriner, is listed as the photographer.
  • The film is based on the eponymous bestseller by renowned American author Carl Hiaasen, first published in 2002. The novella received numerous literary awards, including an honorable mention from the Newbery Medal, considered the main award of the year in children's literature.
