Days of Being Wild

Set in 1960s Hong Kong, Days of Being Wild follows Yuddy, a charming and idle young man who drifts through a series of romances without ever committing to anyone. His life is upended when he learns that the woman who raised him, a former prostitute, is not his biological mother and refuses to tell him who his real parents are. This revelation pushes him to leave behind the people around him, including a shop clerk who falls for him, a police officer who loves her in vain, and a nightclub performer he has also been seeing, as he sets out for the Philippines to find the mother who gave him up. Along the way, those he abandons struggle with the attachment he refuses to return.

The film is the second directed by Wong Kar-wai, following As Tears Go By in 1988 and preceding Chungking Express in 1994. Wong wrote the screenplay with Jeff Lau Chun-Wai, and Rover Tang produced. Leslie Cheung plays Yuddy, with Maggie Cheung, Andy Lau, Carina Lau, Jacky Cheung and Rebecca Pan in supporting roles.

Released in December 1990, the film earned about 3 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.4 from roughly 28,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.3 from over 600 votes. A critics' rating of 8.2 from 33 reviews places it higher than either audience score.
