Eye of the Beholder

Eye of the Beholder follows a British intelligence agent known as the Eye, a withdrawn surveillance specialist whose assignments keep him at a distance from other people. He is sent to watch Joanna Eris, a woman suspected of blackmailing a government figure. What begins as routine observation turns into something else as he discovers that his target is far more dangerous and elusive than the case file suggests. Joanna repeatedly changes her appearance and identity, and the agent finds himself drawn into her orbit rather than simply tracking her.

Stephan Elliott directed and wrote the film, which followed his 1994 breakout The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and preceded Easy Virtue, A Few Best Men, Rio, I Love You and Swinging Safari. Ewan McGregor plays Stephen Wilson, with Ashley Judd as Joanna Eris. Patrick Bergin, K.D. Lang, Geneviève Bujold and Jason Priestley appear among the credited cast of 28. The production, a collaboration between Australian, British and Canadian companies, cost about 15 million US dollars and returned roughly 18 million worldwide.

Audience scores are modest: on IMDb the film holds 5 out of 10 from around 17,000 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 4.9 out of 10 from far fewer votes. A critics' rating of 3.6 out of 10 from 88 reviews places professional response below the already muted audience numbers, making this a thriller that drew limited enthusiasm from either group.
