Short description

Set during the Klondike Gold Rush of the late 1890s, The Far Country follows Jeff Webster, a cattle driver who heads north with his older partner Ben Tatum to sell a herd to the prospectors flooding into the Yukon. Legal trouble forces the pair to work off their debt to a saloon owner, who has them drive her supplies into a new Canadian boom town that is growing faster than the law can keep up with. There they run up against Judge Gannon, a corrupt local power whose interests conflict with Jeff's plan to sell his cattle at a profit. Jeff's self-reliant outlook is tested as the lawlessness around him closes in.

Anthony Mann directed the western from a screenplay by Borden Chase. It was the twelfth of the twenty films Mann directed, arriving between The Glenn Miller Story and The Man from Laramie, and it reunited him with James Stewart, who plays Jeff. The cast also includes Ruth Roman as Ronda Castle, Corinne Calvet as Renee Vallon, Walter Brennan as Ben Tatum, John McIntire as Judge Gannon and Jay C. Flippen as Rube, among a credited cast of 99 and crew of 54.

Released in February 1954, the film took in about 3 million dollars worldwide. Ratings place it well within the director's western work: on IMDb it holds 7.1 out of 10 from roughly 9,500 votes, and on TMDB 6.9 from a much smaller pool of 175. A critics' rating of 8 out of 10 from 12 reviews sits above both audience scores, suggesting reviewers held the film in somewhat higher regard than general viewers did.
