Sahara

During the Western Desert Campaign of World War II, an American tank commander named Sergeant Joe Gunn and his crew become separated from their unit after the fall of Tobruk. As they cross the Libyan desert in their tank, they gather a mixed group of Allied soldiers, including British troops, a Frenchman, a South African, and a Sudanese corporal escorting an Italian prisoner of war. Short on water and supplies, the group is led to an abandoned desert fort where a well offers hope of survival. Their arrival soon attracts a much larger German force that also needs the water, leaving Gunn and his men to mount a desperate defense while hoping for relief.

Zoltan Korda directed this 1943 Columbia Pictures production, his fourth feature following Elephant Boy, The Four Feathers and Jungle Book. He co-wrote the screenplay with John Howard Lawson, and Harry Joe Brown produced. Humphrey Bogart leads the cast as Sergeant Joe Gunn, with Bruce Bennett, J. Carrol Naish, Lloyd Bridges, Rex Ingram and Richard Aherne among the credited players.

The film has held up reasonably well with audiences over the decades, earning a 7.5 rating on IMDb from around 11,000 votes and a 7.2 on TMDB from a smaller sample of viewers. A critics' rating of 7.1 from 12 reviews places it close to the audience scores. It grossed about 2 million dollars worldwide.
