Jawbreaker

Jawbreaker follows three popular students at Reagan High School whose plan to prank their friend on her birthday ends in her death. Courtney, Julie and Marcie try to cover up what happened, but a classmate who saw too much becomes a problem they decide to handle by bringing her into the group rather than silencing her. The film mixes comedy with crime and thriller elements, sending up the conventions of American high school life and the teen horror films built around it.

Darren Stein wrote and directed the film, his second feature after Sparkler in 1997 and one he would not follow with another until G.B.F. in 2014. Rose McGowan plays Courtney Shayne, with Rebecca Gayheart as Julie Freeman, Julie Benz as Marcie Fox and Judy Greer as Fern Mayo. Pam Grier appears as Detective Vera Cruz and Carol Kane as Ms. Sherwood. Lisa Tornell and Stacy Kramer produced for TriStar Pictures, and the film runs 87 minutes.

Made for about 3 million dollars, the film took in roughly the same amount worldwide during its theatrical run, so it did not become a major commercial success. On IMDb it holds 5.7 out of 10 from more than 28,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.4 from a much smaller base of around 600. A critics' score of 3.6 from 64 reviews places it well below the audience figures on both sites.
