The Adventures of Pinocchio

A wooden puppet carved by Geppetto, a lonely craftsman, comes to life through magic and sets out to prove himself worthy of becoming a real boy. His journey takes him away from home and into the hands of those who would exploit him, among them the scheming Lorenzini. The story is drawn from Carlo Collodi's nineteenth-century tale of the puppet who must learn responsibility before his wish can be granted.

Steve Barron directed and co-wrote the film with Tom Benedek and Barry Berman. It followed his earlier work on Electric Dreams, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Coneheads, and came before Rat and Dreamkeeper. Martin Landau plays Geppetto, with Jonathan Taylor Thomas as the puppet, Geneviève Bujold as Leona, Udo Kier as Lorenzini, and Bebe Neuwirth and Rob Schneider among the supporting cast. The production was an international one, mounted by companies in Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, France and the Czech Republic.

Made for about 25 million USD, the film returned roughly 15 million USD worldwide, less than its cost. Audiences have been lukewarm: it holds a rating of 5.3 out of 10 on IMDb from around 6,600 votes, and the same score on TMDB from a much smaller pool of 257 votes.
