Raanjhanaa is an Indian romantic drama set in Varanasi, where Kundan, the son of a Tamil Hindu priest, grows up devoted to Zoya, a Muslim girl from his neighbourhood. His feelings are not returned in the way he hopes, and the distance between them widens as she is drawn towards the ideas and opportunities of a larger city. Class, religion and family expectations stand between the two, and Kundan's attempts to win her over bring him into conflict with the world she wants to belong to. Whether the two can ever find common ground is the question the film follows.
The film was released in June 2013 and runs 140 minutes. Aanand L. Rai directed it from a screenplay by Himanshu Sharma, with Krishika Lulla producing. It was Rai's first directed feature, preceding Zero, Raksha Bandhan and Tere Ishk Mein. Dhanush plays Kundan and Sonam Kapoor Ahuja plays Zoya, with Abhay Deol, Swara Bhasker, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and Shilpi Marwaha in supporting roles. The film has an IMDb rating of 7.6 from around 38,000 votes and a TMDB rating of 6.6 from 171 votes, suggesting it is better known and more warmly received among the larger IMDb audience than among the smaller TMDB group.
