Diggstown

Gabriel Caine, a con man, has just finished a prison term when he arrives in Diggstown, a small town where illegal boxing matches draw crowds of gamblers. The town is effectively run by John Gillon, who profits from the betting. Caine proposes a wager to him: he can produce a fighter who will beat ten of Diggstown's best men in the ring within a single day. His fighter is "Honey" Roy Palmer, a former champion in his late forties whose age makes him look like a poor bet. Palmer turns out to be in better condition than expected.

Michael Ritchie directed the film, the thirteenth of the fifteen features he made, following Fletch Lives and preceding The Scout. Steven McKay wrote the screenplay, and Robert Schaffel produced it for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. James Woods plays Caine, with Louis Gossett Jr. as Palmer and Oliver Platt as Caine's associate Fitz. Heather Graham, Randall "Tex" Cobb and Thomas Wilson Brown appear among the thirty-eight credited cast members.

Released in August 1992, the film runs 98 minutes. It cost about 17 million dollars and took roughly 5 million worldwide, so it did not recover its budget at the box office. Audiences are warmer toward it than critics: on IMDb it holds 6.9 out of 10 from around 8,800 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.3 from 128 votes, against a critics' rating of 5.6 from 16 reviews.
