Short description

Third Person is a drama told through three separate strands playing out in Paris, New York and Rome. In Paris, a novelist who has recently left his wife is trying to finish a book about love while carrying on a troubled affair with a younger writer. In New York, a mother stands accused over an incident that nearly killed her son, and the boy's father is fighting for custody. In Rome, an American businessman travelling for work falls for a local woman and becomes entangled in the kidnapping of her daughter. The three stories gradually reveal connections between them.

Paul Haggis directed and wrote the screenplay; the film follows Crash, In the Valley of Elah and The Next Three Days in the five features he had directed at that point. Liam Neeson, Mila Kunis and Adrien Brody lead the three strands, with James Franco, Olivia Wilde and Maria Bello among a credited cast of 24. The production involved German, Belgian, British and American companies and cost about 28 million dollars, against a worldwide box office of roughly 2 million, a wide gap between spending and takings.

Audience response was muted: on TMDB the film holds 5.9 out of 10 from 658 votes. On IMDb the critics' rating stands at 4.5 out of 10 from 106 reviews, a weaker figure than the audience score.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The hotel room scene, in which Anna (played by Olivia Wilde) appears and hands a bathrobe to Michael (played by Liam Neeson), was filmed nearly 60 times because Neeson was constantly distracted by his co-star's naked body.
  • Originally, Mila Kunis was intended to play Anna, but after reading the script, she requested to be cast in the role of Julia instead.
  • Filming began on October 15, 2012.
  • According to James Franco, Mila Kunis's friend (and future husband) Ashton Kutcher, who was present on set, could not bear to watch Franco hit Kunis in the face and then drag her across the floor. Kutcher simply walked away from the set to avoid seeing it. While Franco was dragging Kunis across the carpet, he tripped at one point. This detail was not in the script, but director and screenwriter Paul Haggis chose to keep this take in the film because it added extra tension to the scene.
  • Most of the film, including the street scenes in New York, was shot on sets built at Cinecita Studios in Rome.
  • Jude Law and Naomi Watts were supposed to play one of the couples, but later opted for other projects.
  • The film is set in three world capitals, but in reality, almost the entire film was shot at the legendary Cinecittà Studios near Rome, to save money. To obtain the iconic New York yellow taxis, they turned to Bulgaria, where a lot of international film production is currently taking place.
  • This is the fourth joint film for Mila Kunis and James Franco. Previously, they starred together in 'Date Night,' 'Time After Time,' and 'Oz the Great and Powerful.'
  • In the scene where Anna looks at her iPhone in Paris, the screen displays the AT&T carrier. This company does not provide services in Paris.
  • When Anna gets ready to meet with Daniel, she buttons her shirt incorrectly. In the next shot, the shirt is already buttoned correctly.
