Z for Zachariah

After a nuclear war, a young woman named Ann Burden lives alone on the farm where she grew up, in a valley whose own weather system has kept its air free of radiation. She believes she may be the only person left alive until she encounters John Loomis, a scientist who has survived by wearing a suit he built himself and who has all but given up hope of finding anyone. A wary trust forms between them, and both begin to consider a shared future. That balance is disturbed when a younger newcomer, Caleb, arrives in the valley, and the two men begin competing for Ann's attention.

Craig Zobel directed the film, his second feature after Compliance, and Nissar Modi wrote the screenplay. Margot Robbie plays Ann, with Chiwetel Ejiofor as Loomis and Chris Pine as Caleb. The production was an international one, involving companies from the United States, Iceland, New Zealand and Switzerland, and runs 97 minutes.

The film drew a critics' rating of 7 out of 10 from 95 reviews, noticeably higher than its audience scores on IMDb and TMDB, which sit at 6 and 5.7 respectively from tens of thousands and roughly a thousand votes. The gap suggests reviewers responded more favorably to the restrained three-character drama than general viewers did.
