A damaged spacecraft makes an emergency landing on Earth and is seized by the United States government, which takes the vessel to a laboratory to study its power source. Its pilot, who looks like an ordinary cat but wears a collar granting him special abilities, including speech and telekinesis, escapes capture. Going by the name Jake, he needs help repairing his ship before his chance to rejoin his mothership runs out, and he finds it when a scientist named Frank Wilson takes him in.
Walt Disney Productions released the film in June 1978, with Norman Tokar directing from a screenplay by Ted Key and Ron Miller producing. It was the eighth feature Tokar directed for the studio, arriving after Candleshoe the previous year. Ken Berry plays Frank, Sandy Duncan appears as Liz, and Harry Morgan portrays General Stilton, with Roddy McDowall, McLean Stevenson and Jesse White among the credited cast of thirty-six. Made for about four million dollars, the family comedy drew moderate audience scores, sitting at 6 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 6,700 votes and the same figure on TMDB from a much smaller sample.
