Short description
Ambulance driver Frank Jessup is ensnared in the schemes of the sensuous but dangerous Diane Tremayne.
What's left behind the scenes
- Robert Mitchum (1917-1997) became so tired of reshooting the same scene, in which the script required him to slap Jean Simmons' (1929-2010) character, that at one point he snapped and slapped director Otto Preminger (1905-1986) instead, then asked: "Was that the way I was supposed to hit her?" Preminger flew into a rage and demanded that producer Howard Hughes (1905-1976) fire Mitchum. Hughes refused.
- The plot of the film was based on a real-life incident that occurred about five years prior. Irving Wallace (1916-1990) wrote several early drafts of the screenplay, although his name did not appear in the credits. It is believed that Ben Hecht (1894-1964) contributed to the script toward the end of filming. In one interview, actress Mona Freeman (1926-2014) mentioned that director Otto Preminger constantly made changes to the screenplay, significantly improving it in the process.
