Set in eighteenth-century Kazakhstan, Nomad: The Warrior follows Mansur, a young man raised in hiding after a prophecy foretells that he will one day unite the scattered nomadic tribes against their enemies. As Dzungar forces push into the steppe and threaten the fortress at Hazrat-e Turkestan, Mansur grows into the military leader the tribes need, while his bond with the warrior Gaukhar develops alongside the wider struggle for the survival of a people. Historical figures of the period, including the khan Abulkhair and the Dzungar commander Galdan Ceren, appear around him.
The film was directed by Ivan Passer and Sergei Bodrov. It followed several earlier features by each: Cutter's Way, Stalin and While Justice Sleeps for Passer, and Running Free for Bodrov, whose later credits include Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan and Seventh Son. Rustam Ibragimbekov wrote the screenplay, and Miloš Forman was among the producers. Kuno Becker plays Mansur, with Jay Hernandez, Jason Scott Lee, Doskhan Zholzhaksynov, Ayanat Ksenbai and Mark Dacascos in supporting roles.
Produced across Russia, Kazakhstan, the United States and France on a budget reported at 40 million USD, the film returned about 3 million USD worldwide, a small fraction of its cost. On IMDb it holds 5.8 out of 10 from around 4,100 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.2 from 69 votes.
