Danny Webson Miller has spent four years in the army thinking about Brooklyn, and when the war ends he returns to the borough expecting the place he imagined. Reality falls short, but he finds a room with Nick Lombardi, the janitor at his old high school, who takes on something like a father's role toward him, and work as a singer in a music store. Through his new life he meets Leo, a gifted young pianist, and Anne Fielding, Leo's music teacher, whose ambition is to sing opera. The arrival of Jamie Shellgrove from England changes the household: Danny sets out to show the visitor the real Brooklyn and to help him write modern swing music, while the four of them try to secure Leo a scholarship to a Brooklyn music school. A romantic triangle develops when Jamie and Anne are drawn to each other.
Richard Whorf directed the film, his first, from a screenplay by Isobel Lennart, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer produced it. Frank Sinatra leads as Danny, with Kathryn Grayson as Anne, Peter Lawford as Jamie, Jimmy Durante as Nick and Aubrey Mather as the Duke of Dunstable.
The film runs 105 minutes and mixes comedy, music and romance. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.5/10 from around 1,200 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.9/10 from a much smaller number of votes, indicating a modest but persistent following rather than broad acclaim.
