Bartok the Magnificent is an animated family film about a small albino bat who performs staged acts of heroism on the streets of Moscow, where audiences take his tricks at face value. When the young prince Ivan is abducted, the task of rescuing him falls to Bartok, who has to summon genuine courage rather than the boastful showmanship he is known for. His friend Zozi, a bear, joins him on the mission.
The film follows Bartok, a character introduced in the 1997 feature Anastasia, into his own story, and it was directed by Gary Goldman and Don Bluth, whose shared filmography includes Thumbelina, The Pebble and the Penguin, Anastasia, this film and Titan A.E. Don Bluth's earlier directing work reaches back to The Small One, The Secret of N.I.M.H. and An American Tail. Jay Lacopo wrote the screenplay, while Goldman and Bluth produced. Hank Azaria voices Bartok, with Kelsey Grammer as Zozi, Andrea Martin as Baba Yaga, Catherine O'Hara as Ludmilla, Tim Curry as the Skull and Jennifer Tilly as Piloff.
Running just over an hour, the film blends comedy, fantasy and music. Audience scores place it around the middle of the range, with a rating of 6.1 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 3,600 votes and 6 out of 10 on TMDB from about 233 votes.
