Bent

Set in Germany during the 1930s, Bent follows Max, a young man drawn into Berlin's gay nightlife. After a night that coincides with a violent political purge, he and his companion Rudy are arrested and sent to a concentration camp. There Max conceals his homosexuality and takes on a different prisoner identity, since the Nazi regime ranks gay men at the very bottom of its hierarchy. In the camp he meets Horst, who wears his own pink triangle without shame, and their growing bond forces Max to rethink what love and survival mean.

The film is a British production directed by Sean Mathias, adapted by Martin Sherman from his own play. It was Mathias's first feature, arriving well before his later films Hamlet and Frank and Percy. Clive Owen plays Max, with Lothaire Bluteau as Horst, Brian Webber as Rudy, Ian McKellen as Uncle Freddie, Mick Jagger as Greta, and Paul Bettany as a captain among a credited cast of forty.

Bent runs 105 minutes. On IMDb it holds a 7.1 rating from roughly 9,300 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.9 from a much smaller sample of 161. A critics' score of 6.3 from 23 reviews places it below the audience figure on IMDb, suggesting viewers responded to it somewhat more warmly than reviewers did.
