Sports agent JB Bernstein is struggling to keep his agency afloat, so he comes up with an unusual recruitment idea after catching a televised cricket match. He travels to India to stage a reality competition called Million Dollar Arm, searching among young cricket players for someone who might be turned into a baseball pitcher. Two teenagers, Rinku and Dinesh, win the contest and travel with him to the United States, where they are trained by Tom House even though they know almost nothing about baseball or American life. The film follows the adjustments on both sides as Bernstein's gamble tests his business, his relationships and his sense of what matters.
Craig Gillespie directed the film, which sits between his 2011 release Fright Night and his 2016 film The Finest Hours. Tom McCarthy wrote the screenplay, and the cast is led by Jon Hamm as JB, with Suraj Sharma and Madhur Mittal as Rinku and Dinesh, alongside Aasif Mandvi, Pitobash and Darshan Jariwala.
Released in 2014, the production had a budget of 25 million USD and took in about 38 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from roughly 49,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.7 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 6 out of 10 from 145 reviews places it in similar territory to the audience scores.
