The Outsider

Set in post-World War II Osaka, this crime drama follows Nick Lowell, an American soldier who remains in Japan after being released from prison. After receiving help from a yakuza member named Kyoshi, Lowell integrates himself into the criminal organization to repay his debt and earn respect. He navigates the strict rituals and dangerous hierarchy of the syndicate as an outsider, though his position becomes complicated when he begins a relationship with Kyoshi's sister.

Directed by Martin Zandvliet, this was the second feature the director made, following Land of Mine and preceding The Marco Effect. The film was written by Andrew Baldwin and stars Jared Leto as the lead character, alongside Tadanobu Asano, Kippei Shiina, Shioli Kutsuna, Min Tanaka, and Nao Omori. It is a joint production between the United States and Japan, produced by Waypoint Entertainment and The Linson Company.

The movie received a mixed response from audiences, holding a 6.3 rating on IMDb from 32,000 votes and a 6.1 rating on TMDB based on 715 votes. This viewer reception is notably higher than the score provided by film critics, who rated the production a 3.3 out of 10 across 23 reviews.
