We Own the Night
Short description
In late-1980s New York, Bobby Green manages a Brooklyn nightclub that has become a hub for the Russian mafia's drug trade. He keeps the club's owners happy and looks the other way, while hiding a family connection that would complicate his position: his brother Joseph and his father Burt are both senior police officers. Only his girlfriend Amada knows about them. As the criminals grow bolder and violence between the gangs and the police escalates, Bobby's two lives cannot stay apart any longer.
James Gray directed and wrote the film, the fourth of the nine features he has directed to date, following The Yards and later followed by Two Lovers. Joaquin Phoenix, who also produced, leads as Bobby, with Mark Wahlberg as Joseph, Eva Mendes as Amada and Robert Duvall as Burt. Nick Wechsler and Wahlberg also produced.
The film was released in October 2007 and runs 118 minutes. Made for around 21 million dollars, it earned roughly 55 million worldwide, a solid return. On IMDb it holds 6.8 from about 96,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.7 from around 1,500 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 6.1 from 154 reviews, slightly below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- According to Mark Wahlberg, Joaquin Phoenix immersed himself in the role before filming by vehemently cursing Robert Duvall. It got to the point where Wahlberg sometimes had to intervene.
- The car chase scene was filmed on a sunny day, and the rain was added using computer technology.
- Christopher Walken was initially cast as Albert, but had to decline due to commitments to other projects. Robert Duvall was brought in at the very last moment.
- The film’s title comes from the motto of the New York City Police Department’s street crime unit, which was disbanded in 2002. During the opening credits, a patch worn by the unit’s officers flashes on the screen.
- While developing the car chase scene, director James Gray, in search of fresh ideas, reviewed similar scenes in every film he could find – from silent films to modern ones. Ultimately, he concluded that, as far as he could tell, no one had ever shot such scenes from the perspective of only one participant in the chase. He shot a scene like that.
