• According to Mark Wahlberg, Joaquin Phoenix immersed himself in the role before filming by vehemently cursing Robert Duvall. It got to the point where Wahlberg sometimes had to intervene.
• The car chase scene was filmed on a sunny day, and the rain was added using computer technology.
• Christopher Walken was initially cast as Albert, but had to decline due to commitments to other projects. Robert Duvall was brought in at the very last moment.
• The film’s title comes from the motto of the New York City Police Department’s street crime unit, which was disbanded in 2002. During the opening credits, a patch worn by the unit’s officers flashes on the screen.
• While developing the car chase scene, director James Gray, in search of fresh ideas, reviewed similar scenes in every film he could find – from silent films to modern ones. Ultimately, he concluded that, as far as he could tell, no one had ever shot such scenes from the perspective of only one participant in the chase. He shot a scene like that.
