Short description
Edith Cushing, an aspiring American writer in the late nineteenth century, is drawn to Sir Thomas Sharpe, a charming Englishman who arrives in her city seeking backing for an invention. After a family tragedy leaves her alone, she marries him and moves into his ancestral home in northern England, a decaying house shared with his sister, Lucille. There, Edith, who still feels the pull of her childhood friend Dr. Alan McMichael, finds herself in a place that seems to breathe, bleed and remember.
Guillermo del Toro directed the film, his ninth of thirteen features in chronological order, following Pacific Rim and preceding The Shape of Water. He wrote the screenplay with Matthew Robbins and produced alongside Callum Greene and Thomas Tull. Mia Wasikowska plays Edith, Tom Hiddleston plays Thomas, Jessica Chastain plays Lucille, and Charlie Hunnam plays Alan; Jim Beaver and Burn Gorman also appear. The production was mounted on a budget of 55 million dollars and returned 75 million dollars worldwide, a modest result for a release of its scale.
On IMDb the film holds 6.5 out of 10 from around 169,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.7 out of 10 from roughly 5,354 votes. A critics' rating of 6.6 out of 10 from 284 reviews places professional assessments close to the audience scores, with neither side markedly more favourable than the other.
What's left behind the scenes
- The first draft of the screenplay was co-written with Matthew Robinson. However, the script was later rewritten. Guillermo del Toro continued working on it with Lucinda Coxon.
- The house where the events of the film take place, along with all the items inside, was built from scratch on the set.
- Benedict Cumberbatch and Emma Stone were originally intended to be the main duo in the film, but ultimately Tom Hiddleston and Mia Wasikowska received the respective roles.
- The film was shot in 68 days.
- Guillermo del Toro wrote approximately 12 versions of the film's script before settling on the final one. He even came up with new scenes during production.
- Filming took place in Kingston (Ontario, Canada).
- When Edith coughs up blood at night, drops fall onto the pillow. However, when she gets up to investigate the source of the sounds, there is no trace of blood left.
- The trailer for the film features a song by PJ Harvey – “Red Right Hand” (a cover of Nick Cave’s song). The original song was used in the film “Hellboy” (2004), which was also directed by Guillermo del Toro.
- Doctor Alan claims that it is impossible to fake a photograph of a ghost on a glass plate. In fact, at that time, many 'ghost photos' were taken on glass plates, as expensive plates were reused, and if not cleaned properly, a 'ghostly' image would remain.
