Mother Night follows Howard W. Campbell Jr., an American writer living in Berlin as the Second World War approaches. Recruited by a mysterious countryman to serve as a spy for the United States, he takes on the public role of a broadcaster of Nazi propaganda, a position that makes him useful to his handlers but notorious to everyone else. When the war ends, that same role follows him: he cannot prove what he really was without exposing the operation, and he is left to weigh whether he was a hero, a traitor, or both. The film is based on Kurt Vonnegut's 1962 novel.
Keith Gordon directed, working from a screenplay by Robert B. Weide; both also produced. It was Gordon's second feature, arriving four years after A Midnight Clear. Nick Nolte plays Campbell, with Sheryl Lee as Helga and Resi Noth, and Alan Arkin as George Kraft among a credited cast of 32. Made for about 6 million dollars, the film received a critics' rating of 6.5 out of 10 from 25 reviews, while audiences on IMDb rate it 7.1 out of 10 from roughly 5,900 votes and on TMDB 6.6 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes, indicating a modest but generally favourable response.
