Despicable Me
Short description
Despicable Me centers on Gru, a supervillain who lives in a black house in an otherwise ordinary suburban neighborhood. Hidden beneath the property is a large secret base staffed by his army of small yellow Minions, and from there he plots the biggest heist in history: stealing the Moon. To carry out the scheme he adopts three orphaned girls, Margo, Edith and Agnes, planning to use them in his plan. The bond that forms with them instead makes him reconsider the criminal life he has led.
The 2010 animated film was directed by Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud, the first feature in a directing career that would continue with several further Despicable Me and Minions films. Ken Daurio and Cinco Paul wrote the screenplay, and Chris Meledandri, Janet Healy and John Cohen produced it for Universal Pictures and Illumination. Steve Carell voices Gru, with Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Julie Andrews, Will Arnett and Kristen Wiig among the cast.
Made for 69 million USD, it took 543 million USD worldwide, a strong return that established the series. On IMDb it holds 7.6/10 from 629,000 votes and on TMDB 7.3/10 from 16,398 votes. A critics' rating of 6.8/10 from 201 reviews sits below the audience scores, indicating a more measured critical response than the broad public approval.

- At the end of the film, when Gru throws a disco, the minion's DJ booth displays the marking “Gru-ray disc” with an inverted “b,” a parody of Blu-Ray discs.
