Short description
An established lawyer returns to his childhood home to attend his mother's funeral. While there, he discovers that his father, a local judge with whom he is estranged, has been accused of murder. The protagonist decides to stay in town to defend his father in court and investigate the crime, a process that leads him to reconnect with the family members he had long avoided.
This drama was directed by David Dobkin, marking his sixth feature film after The Change-Up and before Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. The movie stars Robert Downey Jr. as Hank Palmer and Robert Duvall as Joseph Palmer, with a supporting cast including Vera Farmiga, Vincent D'Onofrio, Jeremy Strong, and Dax Shepard. Produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, Village Roadshow Pictures, Big Kid Pictures, and Team Downey, the project had a budget of 50 million USD and earned 84 million USD at the worldwide box office.
Audience reception has been generally positive, with a rating of 7.4/10 on IMDb based on 218,000 votes and a 7.3/10 on TMDB from 4,540 votes. These scores are notably higher than the 5.7/10 rating provided by film critics.

- Janusz Kamiński shot almost the entire film on film stock, rejecting digital technology in favor of a classic image full of light and warm colors.

- The judge tells the defendant to go to Indianapolis in early August to see the largest bull in the world. In fact, the state fair held in that city features not a bull, but the largest pig in the world.
- The amount of ice cream in Lauren's waffle cone increases and decreases with each shot change.
- In the film, all cars from Indiana have license plates located on the front bumper. In reality, this license plate placement is not used in the state of Indiana.
- Elizabeth Banks was one of the main contenders for the role that went to Vera Farmiga.
- The film crew was unable to find a courtroom anywhere in America that could be occupied for three weeks to work on the film, so the sets had to be built on a huge empty warehouse in Norwood, Massachusetts, USA.
- Jack Nicholson and Tommy Lee Jones were considered for the role that ultimately went to Robert Duvall.
- On the day of the protagonist's mother's funeral, when the family gathers at a diner, one of the brothers says they have been having breakfast at this place every Saturday for 35 years. Later, when Hank breaks into a similar diner, a sign on the building can be seen reading “Established 1996”.
