The Grand Seduction is a Canadian comedy set in Tickle Head, a tiny fishing village on an island off Newfoundland. With the harbour idle and the residents living on government support, the community pins its hopes on a petrochemical company that might build a plant nearby. The company's condition is that the town have a resident doctor, which it does not. When a young big-city physician, Paul Lewis, arrives for a trial stay, the acting mayor, Murray French, organizes the townspeople to make the place irresistible so he will agree to remain.
The film was directed by Don McKellar, his second feature after Last Night, from a screenplay by Michael Dowse and Ken Scott, and it is a remake of the 2003 Quebec film of the same title. Brendan Gleeson plays Murray French, Taylor Kitsch plays Dr. Lewis, and the cast includes Gordon Pinsent, Liane Balaban, Mark Critch and Peter Keleghan, with 25 credited performers and 74 credited crew.
Released in May 2014, the film runs 112 minutes and cost about 13 million US dollars, against a worldwide box office of roughly 3 million. Audience responses are mildly favourable: it holds 7 out of 10 on IMDb from 21,000 votes and 6.7 out of 10 on TMDB from 371 votes, while a critics' rating of 5.8 out of 10 from 68 reviews places professional assessments below those audience scores.
