One Chance

One Chance tells the true story of Paul Potts, a shy man from South Wales who works in a mobile phone shop while carrying a long-held ambition to sing opera. Bullied and short on confidence, he pursues his dream anyway, leaving Britain to study singing in Venice, where he meets the woman who becomes his wife. The film follows his path toward a national television talent competition, the moment that turns him from an unknown amateur into a performer recognized around the world.

David Frankel directed the film from a screenplay by Justin Zackham. It sits between Hope Springs and Collateral Beauty in Frankel's filmography, the sixth of the nine features listed for him. James Corden plays Potts, with Alexandra Roach as Julz, Julie Walters as Yvonne, Colm Meaney as Roland Potts, Jemima Rooper as Hydrangea and Mackenzie Crook as Braddon. Simon Cowell, a producer on the project alongside Brad Weston and Kris Thykier, was himself part of the talent show that made Potts famous, and Syco Television is among the production companies, alongside The Weinstein Company, Weston Pictures and Relevant Entertainment.

Released in 2013, the film took about 11 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.8 out of 10 from roughly 14,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.7 from around 324 votes, indicating a modest but generally favourable audience response. A critics' rating of 5.6 out of 10 from 58 reviews places it lower with reviewers than with viewers.
