Keeping Up with the Steins

Keeping Up with the Steins is a 2006 American comedy about Benjamin Fiedler, a thirteen-year-old boy preparing for his bar mitzvah, the Jewish ceremony that marks his passage into adulthood. His parents throw themselves into planning an elaborate party, and the social pressure around the event grows when the family measures its plans against a classmate's lavish celebration. Benjamin's own response is to invite his grandfather, a free-spirited man long estranged from Benjamin's father after a quarrel, in the hope that the gathering will bring the two men back together. Three generations of the family end up under one roof, and the reunion pushes them to recognize how much they have in common.

The film was directed by Scott Marshall from a screenplay by Mark Zakarin, who also produced alongside David Scharf and A.D. Oppenheim. Daryl Sabara plays Benjamin, with Jami Gertz and Jeremy Piven as his parents, Cheryl Hines as Casey Nudelman, Carter Jenkins as Zachary Stein and Sandra Taylor as Raylene Stein. Twenty-three performers are credited.

Released on May 12, 2006, the film runs 90 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.4 from around 3,400 votes, and on TMDB 5.3 from a much smaller pool of 47 votes. A critics' rating of 4.9 from 83 reviews places it close to the audience scores, with viewers and reviewers roughly in agreement.
