Short description
Chef Carl Casper works in a prominent Los Angeles restaurant, but his employer refuses to let him cook the food he believes in, insisting instead on a menu that draws a negative review. Rather than accept the situation, Carl walks away from the job and has to work out what comes next. He travels to Miami, where he joins forces with his ex-wife, a friend and his young son to open a food truck. Cooking on the road allows him to return to his roots and rebuild both his professional confidence and his relationship with his family.
Jon Favreau directed, wrote and stars as Carl, leading a cast that includes John Leguizamo, Bobby Cannavale, Emjay Anthony, Scarlett Johansson and Dustin Hoffman, with 87 credited cast members and 114 credited crew. The film followed several large-scale studio projects in Favreau's filmography, arriving between Cowboys & Aliens and The Jungle Book.
Made for about 11 million dollars, Chef went on to take roughly 50 million dollars worldwide, a strong return relative to its cost. On IMDb it holds 7.3 out of 10 from around 249,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.1 out of 10 from a much smaller set of votes. A critics' rating of 6.8 out of 10 from 188 reviews places it close to, though slightly below, the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- When Carl and his son are sitting in the movie theater, the sound of repulsors from the film "Iron Man" (2008), directed by Jon Favreau, can be heard.
- When Percy creates Carl's Twitter account, you can notice that the account name is “@ChefCarlCasper.” However, Carl's very first tweet is posted by the user “@CasperCarl.” For the remainder of the film, all of his tweets are correctly posted from the account “@ChefCarlCasper.”
- During the filming of the movie, Jon Favreau prepared his own dishes, learning from a chef named Roy Choi, who, like his character, works in a food truck.
- Roy Choi agreed to teach Jon Favreau to cook only on the condition that he be completely believable as a professional chef in every way – from how his character Carl folds towels at the beginning of the film, to how he cleans up his food truck. Choi even made Favreau work in his kitchens, doing menial and monotonous tasks, such as sorting parsley. This was necessary to teach Favreau to focus on the smallest details, to understand how a professional chef thinks, who needs to always remain focused and attentive to every little thing, regardless of the circumstances.
