Toy Story of Terror!
Short description
Toy Story of Terror! is an animated television special in which the familiar group of toys sets out on a road trip that turns into something much less cheerful. When bad weather forces a stop at a roadside motel, the companions take shelter for the night, only for one of them to disappear. The remaining toys are drawn into a chain of strange events at the motel as they try to work out what happened and avoid the same fate. Woody, Jessie, Buzz and Rex are among those facing the danger, and the story leans on suspense and mystery rather than the outdoor adventure the trip promised.
Angus MacLane directed and wrote the special, his third directorial credit after BURN·E in 2008 and Small Fry in 2011, and before Lightyear in 2022. Galyn Susman produced, and the voice cast includes Joan Cusack as Jessie, Tom Hanks as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, Don Rickles as Mr. Potato Head, Carl Weathers as Combat Carl and Combat Carl Jr., and Stephen Tobolowsky as Ron, across 21 credited performers. Made by Walt Disney Pictures, Pixar and Disney Television Animation, the 22-minute special was released in October 2013.
Reception was solid on both sides. On IMDb the special holds a rating of 7.3/10 from 1,065 votes, while a critics' rating of 7.9/10 from 17 reviews puts professional approval somewhat ahead of the general audience score. For a short television outing tied to an established franchise, the figures point to a well-liked entry rather than a divisive one.
What's left behind the scenes
- This short film was made as a parody of horror movies and in celebration of Halloween.
- At the cemetery at the beginning of the film, Betsy is shown at a tombstone with the inscription "Rest in peace, Simon J. Paladino – a civil servant with a unique vision of the world." Simon J. Paladino was the name of one of the minor characters in the computer animated film "The Incredibles" (2004), who possessed laser vision.
