The Minus Man

Vann Siegert is a quiet, agreeable man who drifts into a small coastal town and settles into a room rented from an unhappy married couple, Doug and Jane. He seems pleasant and easy to like, and people project onto him whatever they want him to be. What they do not know is that Vann is a serial killer who selects victims from among those who voice despair and a wish to die, and his arrival coincides with locals beginning to disappear. As he grows close to the couple, who come to treat him almost as a son, and becomes involved with a woman who makes him consider abandoning his compulsion, his future becomes uncertain.

The film is a 1999 American drama and thriller, the feature directing debut of Hampton Fancher, who also wrote the screenplay. Owen Wilson plays Vann, heading a cast that includes Janeane Garofalo, Brian Cox, Mercedes Ruehl, Sheryl Crow and Dwight Yoakam. It runs 111 minutes.
