Rosewater

Rosewater is a drama based on the true story of Maziar Bahari, an Iranian-Canadian journalist who travelled to Iran in 2009 to report on the country's presidential election for Newsweek. While abroad he had taken part in a satirical interview for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and that appearance was later used as evidence against him. He was taken from his family home and held in Tehran's Evin Prison, where he spent 118 days, accused of working for foreign intelligence services. Blindfolded for much of his interrogation, he knew almost nothing about his captor beyond the smell of rosewater.

The film is Jon Stewart's first turn as a director, and he also wrote the screenplay and produced. Gael García Bernal plays Bahari, with Claire Foy as his wife Paola, Shohreh Aghdashloo as Moloojoon, Kim Bodnia as Javadi and Golshifteh Farahani as Maryam. It runs 103 minutes.

Rosewater was released in 2014 and draws moderate scores from both critics and audiences: 6.7/10 from 153 critics' reviews, 6.6/10 on IMDb from around 11,000 votes, and 6.4/10 on TMDB. Stewart went on to direct Irresistible in 2020.
