Short description

As the Great War breaks out in Europe, Oxford brothers Roy and Monte enlist in the RFC to fight for queen and country, while their college friend Karl is drafted in Germany. A love triangle involving Monte, Roy, and Roy's girlfriend, Helen, the brothers' disparate personalities, and Monte's cowardice in the face of war soon threaten to compromise a top-secret bombing mission over German territory.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Three pilots died during the filming of Hell's Angels, one of whom was due to Hughes' fault and his consuming drive for perfection. Howard decided to film the crash of a burning German bomber. The two pilots flying the plane were supposed to parachute out after sending it diving. Pilot Phil Jones was unable to escape the bomber.
  • Some scenes were filmed using the Multicolor system, meaning they were tinted in a red-green color scheme.
  • Through the patronage of her acquaintance, actor James Hall, Jean Harlow met the famous aviator, director, and future multimillionaire Howard Hughes, who was only twenty-four years old at the time. As the trendy new sound cinema was beginning to gain ground in the film industry, Hughes decided to reshoot his silent film "Hell's Angels" with sound and was looking for a replacement for actress Greta Nissen—the latter had starred in the silent version of the film, but due to her heavy Norwegian accent, she lost all chance of continuing her career in sound cinema. During their meeting, Jean managed to pique Hughes's interest; on October 24, 1929, she signed a five-year contract with him and began filming.
  • The film premiered to a full house on May 27, 1930, at the famous Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, with tickets costing a record sum for the time—11 dollars.
