Set in Iraqi Kurdistan in the early 1990s, under Saddam Hussein's rule, the film follows two orphaned brothers, seven-year-old Zana and ten-year-old Dana, who survive on the streets by shining shoes. After glimpsing Superman through a hole in the wall of a local cinema, they become convinced that America is the answer to their troubles and set out to find the superhero. Zana begins a list of people he wants punished, with Saddam Hussein at the top, while Dana works out what the journey would require: money, passports and a way across a heavily guarded border. With an ass and little else, the brothers attempt the journey anyway, putting their bond to the test.
