Heavy

Victor Modino is a cook at a roadside restaurant in New York state, near a highway and an airport, that his mother Dolly owns and runs. The place has its regulars, among them a hard-drinking customer named Leo, and Delores waits tables. Victor is shy and self-conscious about his weight, and he keeps to himself, doing as his mother tells him. When Dolly hires Callie, a young woman who has dropped out of college, Victor falls for her at once but can barely bring himself to speak to her, and the tension between his feelings and his reticence unsettles the small, fixed world of the diner.

Heavy is James Mangold's first feature as director, and he also wrote the screenplay. It is the earliest of the 13 films he has directed in chronological order, ahead of Cop Land in 1997. Pruitt Taylor Vince plays Victor, with Shelley Winters as Dolly, Liv Tyler as Callie, Debbie Harry as Delores, Joe Grifasi as Leo and Evan Dando as Jeff. Richard Miller produced for Available Light.

The film runs 105 minutes and was released at the end of 1995. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.7 from about 6,300 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.6 from a much smaller base of 95 votes. A critics' rating of 7 out of 10 from 32 reviews places it slightly above both audience scores.
