Short description

In 1415, in the midst of the Hundred Years' War, the young King Henry V of England embarks on the conquest of France.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Lawrence Olivier wanted to cast Vivien Leigh as Princess Catherine, but the role was deemed too small for such a major star; ultimately, Renee Asherson, the wife of Robert Donat, was chosen.
  • Filming took place in the vicinity of the Irish village of Annacurry, as well as at Denham and Pinewood studios.
  • Italian lawyer Filippo del Guidice played a major role in the creation of "Henry V," providing over 100,000 pounds for the filming.
  • The film "Henry V," which tells the story of the English campaign in France, was released shortly after the Allied troops landed on the continent.
  • The film was created in the midst of World War II. Lawrence Olivier was specifically released from his military duties for the filming, as the British government considered the release of 'Henry V' to be an excellent propaganda move aimed at boosting the patriotism and morale of the soldiers.
  • Olivier envisioned William Wyler as the film's director, but Wyler was busy with another project and suggested that Olivier direct the film himself.
  • Olivier was well-acquainted with the role of Henry, as he had already performed it at the Old Vic theatre.
  • A film adaptation of the play of the same name by William Shakespeare.
